John’s unique painting technique

John developed a painting method for use with wood that would be the solution to years of aggrivation when it came to the final finishing of his carvings.  This method came to him in a dream.  As soon as he had the realization he awoke with a start and immediately went down to the old tavern studio and tried the concept.

A combination of artist oil paint and boiled linseed oil is applied to the wood first before the actual painting.  He then wiped off the remaining mixture that hadn’t soaked into the wood or filled the wood pores.   This painting method was shared in an article written by Heatwole entitled “Painted Carvings” in the March/April 1987 issue of Fine Woodworking.
