Here are three lists of work from three consecutive shows that John had at Neiman Marcus in Washington D.C. During the first year I believe he also created very involved pieces for their Christmas Windows. When people ask me how many pieces my father would create in a year I can only go by these records to show how many pieces he produced the year leading up to the exhibit. There were probably a few more pieces created during this time that he had to sell to survive and also to give as gifts to his loved ones.

Interesting that he started using his name and the title “Wizard of Wood” bestowed upon him by The Washington Post on the list from the third year.

What really helped to launch my father’s career was holding solo shows at Neiman Marcus in Washington D.C. In addition to caving tons of work for each show he also was commissioned to create some special pieces just for their display cabinets throughout the store. I remember a couple of them really well. They were complete magic to a young mind, I think that i was probably about 10 years old. I’m not completely sure that this piece was one of the ones created for the windows, but if not, it sure has the same flavor as those pieces.

I am not to sure that this is the title. This is what popped into my head though so I am hopeful that I am not to far off. If anyone knows the actual title please do tell. It’s fun comparing this piece with the piece titled “Ta-Da!”

“I wore this on a gold chain with a gold disc for years.
Sarah-Daye chewed on it as a baby. One day getting out of the car the chain was hanging down broken, but no rabbit or gold disc. I was devastated. A year later getting out of my car parked on the gravel drive way I saw a shiny gold thing in the mud. I reached down and picked up my long lost disc. I dug around in the mud and found the rabbit also. John wanted to refinish it but I figured this little bunny earned it’s war wounds.” – D.P. Hand
